Holographic recording results in symmetrical profiles, often designated as laminar profiles. In fact, all holographic profiles are trapezoidal.

Laminar profiles have lower efficiencies compared to blaze profiles, but higher harmonics suppression is often better to achieve with symmetrical profiles. So, if spectral purity is an issue, symmetrical profiles are often to prefer.

Parameters of a Trapezoidal Profile

The most important parameters which determines the diffraction efficiency is the profile depth and the ratio of groove width to period.
